Review: On the Edge

Reviewed by Jen

I read somewhere that Gordon Andrews* once called this series "rustic fantasy." It kind of fits. It's decidedly not urban. The setting is kind of backwoods, really. But it's quirky; it's kind of charming; and while it took me a little while to connect with it, the book grew on me more and more as I continued to read.

This series is nothing like the Kate Daniels books, except for this: the world building takes some getting used to. It's not really hard to understand, but it's also not like anything else out there. In this case, there are essentially two parallel worlds. The Broken is the regular world we live in: a world of Wal-Mart and electricity. Magic is just a myth. Whereas, in the Weird, there is a world of nothing but magic. There is, however, an in-between place. The Edge is a little of both worlds, and somehow neither, at the same time. This is where Rose and her two brothers live.

Rose has more magic than most other people in the Edge, or perhaps it's more accurate to say, she is better at using it. So everyone wants to breed with her, or sell her, or profit from her in some other way. She is raising her little brothers, working a menial job, and has given up hope that her life could be more. When Declan appears, she assumes the noble from the Weird is there to force her into marriage. But at the same time, strange and dangerous creatures begin showing up. Rose has to work with Declan to fight the threat. And as they spend more time together... well, you know how these things go.

Like I said earlier, I didn't love it right away. Maybe it was the backwoods thing; maybe I just had to get used to the concepts. But either way, I ended up rather engrossed in it. Notably absent was the trademark Ilona Andrews snark, but there was a pretty hot sex scene which helped me get over that. There are some interesting secondary characters... especially William. I hope we see more of him in later books. I'm curious to see where the series goes next, since the ending felt pretty settled for Rose and Declan. There is only one way to find out.

A little more than 4 stars.

I read this book a while ago and liked too. I also liked William, the next book Bayou Moon is his book (I liked that book too).
Now I'm waiting for next month to get my hands on Fate's Edge, book 3 of this series.
Great review.

I read Bayou Moon & Fate's Edge this weekend too. I love William (tortured heroes are my favorite.) But I think I prefered Fate's Edge because it was easier to follow than the first two.

I've had this on my TBR and wish list for awhile, but haven't gotten to it yet. I wasn't a big fan of the Kate Daniels series after the first book, i didn't love it until the 2nd. I understand that sometimes it takes time to get into the story. Great review though, I still wanna read this, hopefully sometime soon... Book Savvy Babe

I loved this book! It’s just amazing how talented Andrews is (are?). The world is complex but you can easily get into it, I didn’t have problems getting used to it. My favorite book in the series was Bayou Moon (that part with the mother/cannibal flower was the most disturbing scene ever!), William was a great character and I can’t wait to read the next one (can’t wait to read your thoughts on that one).

Did you read the novella that’s part of the Angels of Darkness anthology? It was amazing! I have read mixed reviews about it and IMO it would have worked much better as a full-length novel, but boy, what an incredible imagination. I really hope they write more books set in the same universe because it has great potential!

Great review!

Brie: I haven't read the Angels of Darkness short yet. But I swear I plan to. The Edge series has been in my TBR pile for a year and I'm ashamed it took me so long to get to it.

I've got to hold the Fate's Edge review until closer to release, but I can tell you that I really enjoyed Kaldar's story. William is my favorite hero of the series, but Bayou Moon really overwhelmed me with the sheer number of characters. Fate's Edge narrowed the focus alot to a core band of people, which made it a much easier read for me.

Great review Jen! I am a massive fan of this series and of Ilona and Gordon in general really! They do have some really unique worlds floating around their heads and I thought that idea of this one was fantastic. I know what you mean though, it did take me longer to get warmed up to this book then it did to Kate Daniels, but it is worth keeping going though as it is a fan read.

I can't wait to start fate's Edge I have it preordered and waiting for me!

I'm so jealous that you've already read Fate's Edge. It will have to be great to top Bayou Moon. I adored William and Cerise. On The Edge was the first book of theirs that I read and it got me so hooked on their writing that I plunged right into Kate Daniels and totally fell in love with that series.
