Review: Simply Irresistible

Although this is an older book (pubbed back in 2010), this series has hit the NYT Bestsellers List --and Jill Shalvis is hilarious on Facebook-- so I figured I'd give her a try. I'm so glad I did! Much in the vein of Kristan Higgins, the Lucky Harbor series stars a sweet little town that everyone wishes they lived in, a heroine looking for a new beginning, and a hero ready to fall in love. I guess you could say that it's a bit romance formulaic, but just like my favorite chick flick, it's not the predictable ending that I love, it's how we get there!

Maddie is on the run from her old life... old boyfriend, old job, old town - all of it. She needs a fresh start and she thinks that a road trip to Lucky Harbor, Washington is where she might get it. She's inherited an old inn with her two older sisters from their mother, and she is ready to slap a coat of paint on the outside and see what it'll do. However, life (as we all know) has other ideas. On her way into town, she almost runs a biker off the road. After she checks to see if he's okay, introduces herself, and apologizes profusely, she makes it to town only to find out that the biker is no stranger and hangs out at the only bar in town. Sparks fly when they meet for a second time and you can tell that Jax, Mr. Sexy Biker Man, is going to fall quick for our Maddie.

Watching Maddie and Jax fall for each other was so sweet, it was almost too vanilla for me. They're an easy couple to fall for, to root for. You want Jax to be more upfront with her, but you know she's holding out on him as well and you just want everything to be okay for them! I do wish there was a little bit more of a story, though. There is plenty of character development which is always satisfying to see, but other than the storyline with her sisters and the inn (which I loved!) the book isn't meaty enough. However, I truly enjoyed Ms. Shalvis' storytelling technique and fully intend on checking out her other series and continuing with this one!
