Review: Blood Lust Rising
Reviewed by Jen
Right off the bat, I've got to tell you: This book is hot! From the very beginning, it's sexy and enticing. It's like there is this current of sensuality that picks you up in the first chapter and doesn't put you down until the last. That doesn't mean it's a dirty sex-fest, though. It's not. There's a solid plot here, a good romance, and characters I could really, um, sink my teeth into.Ella was raised as a Hunter. But now that she is a half-breed vampire, she has become the very thing she has always despised. Since she abstains from drinking blood, she is still able hunt with her old comrades. Her partner is Micah, a sexy human who leaves her both infuriated and infatuated. You can cut the sexual tension between them with a knife, but it's really hard to tell if Micah wants kiss her, kick her ass, or both.
Then a demon shows up, using her powers to free the lust hovering between them. Once that happens, Micah and Ella become connected in away they can barely understand, and certainly never expected. The story follows them as they come to terms with their new relationship, have some rocking hot sex, and work to understand the cryptic prophecy that ties them together.
There's a lot going on, from people trying to kill Ella --to the return of her sire-- to a serious threat to the people she loves. The action is fast paced and intense. The characters are fleshed out and sympathetic. And I totally believed in the relationship between Elle and Micah. The world-building is clear and easy to understand. There are love-to-hate villains and an interesting supporting cast.
The only thing I didn't get... is what made Elle a living vampire, instead of regular one? I understood why the Queen was that way, but unlike her, Elle wasn't born a vamp, so why is she special? At first I thought it was because she didn't drink blood, but even once she does, her heart still beats. So, that bothered me a little.
But overall, I really enjoyed the book. There is a big setup for the second part of the trilogy, but it didn't feel like a cliffhanger. The main arc of this book is resolved, but there is clearly more story to tell. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
