Review: The Mercenary's Marriage

Reviewed by Shelly

Former slave Darius Aarin Laris serves his King, Simon Jenran of Braulyn well. So well, in fact, that he’s gained his freedom. Not only is his freedom secure, Darius has bargained for certain privileges after missions. After this particular mission to confront an enemy, Darius decides to hold the King to his word – he wants Brice as his wife. He says it’s to protect her but he wanted her for more than that. Brice Wrlyn Ashlyn, born a slave, only knows the hand she’s dealt. She literally began her life as the whipping girl for Lord Micrey’s daughter, Gwendolyn. Darius and Brice’s journey takes them from one battle into another, in a time when men fought hard for land, title and coin. Yummy!

Even though he’s been trained as a mercenary soldier, Darius is a compassionate man - quite perfect for Brice, and because of his upbringing does not abuse those around him. But Brice had to learn that through trust and time. Lucky girl. He’s faithfully served his King for many years and in reward is trusted and respected by his King. I really liked Darius.  He’s the quiet, strong type but when he speaks, it’s certainly not wasted – he’s a hunk of delicious man meat.

What can I say about Brice, other than she was a delight to know. When she first lays eyes on Darius, you just knew she saw the man and not the scars or the battle fatigue. She was anxious and fearful without being either clingy or ill tempered. I thought her fears of Darius were perfectly justifiable because of her past with the men in her life and really the age in which she lived. And even better and most perfect actually, she can take a licking and keep on ticking. Don’t worry, it’s not by Darius’s hand. As a matter of fact, Brice totally reminds me of those tough women that I read about in my younger years - if you’ve ever read Judith McNaught’s Westmoreland series, I’m positive you’ll like this too.

There were so many other characters that made up this great story – Ewian and Karyn, the good doctor Kurt, Trenar and many more. All of them quite lovely to know.

Although this is a pretty short story (about 91 pages on e-book) there’s absolutely nothing missing in either the characters development or story line. Oh by the way, there’s no sex but I guarantee you will not miss it.

Happy Reading folks!

This sounds like an interesting and unique read. I tend to stay away from such short reads but this one might be worth it.
