Review: The Overlord's Chosen

OK. Right off the bat, I have to tell you what the blurb doesn't give away about this book: the group sex. Yes, the story is about more than that, but let's put all of our cards on the table at the beginning. My preferences usually run more with one-on-one bedroom action... maybe an occasional menage... so this was a little outside my comfort zone in a couple of ways.

Let me give you the basics first. Elizabeth has been chosen to become Micah's mate. He is the overlord of their people and she already lusts after him. But she fears what will happen if he discovers the fact that she can control magic. Such a thing is forbidden to women, and her mother was burned at the stake for the very same abilities. So when Micah comes for her, she runs and she struggles, but to no avail.

When Micah gets her back to his home, he chains her up and strips her down. This is where my discomfort flared a little. Her body was saying yes, but her mouth was saying no. And while she did eventually surrender, the events walked a fine line for consent. My other issue was that Micah is not the only one touching her. Three different guys had to manually check her for purity (and this was not a clinical check, y'all.) Then his bud Asher stayed around and helped a bit while Micah and Elizabeth finally did the deed.

There really is something to the relationship that develops between Micah and Elizabeth. The interactions between the two of them are what really made the book for me. Each fought the idea that they could feel anything more than lust for one another. And Elizabeth, especially, tried to keep her heart in check, because she knew she'd have to run at the first opportunity.

No doubt Bronwyn Green can write some really good erotica. I found myself furtively looking around the room a few times to see if anyone noticed the flush on my face while I was reading. And it's not just porn without a plot. There's a good story in there about these people, their culture and the villain in their midst. I just, personally, couldn't get over all the men who had sensual interactions with Elizabeth as part their rituals... especially since she didn't want them to do it. It happens more than once. Maybe "group sex" isn't a completely accurate characterization, since only the hero, er, actually puts his pig in the blanket.  But I'm probably splitting hairs.

I did like everything else about the book... including the sexy dynamic between Micah and Elizabeth when they are alone. The ending was very satisfying and the door is wide open for more stories from this world. I would definitely be willing to try this author again, perhaps with a different series.
