Review: A Wild Night's Bride

Oh, and what a wild ride it is. This is a relatively short read but there’s a lot that’s going on. This first story in the Devil DeVere series introduces the devil himself, Viscount Ludovic DeVere, Sir Edward Chambers and Phoebe Scott.

For actress Phoebe, it’s the end of her run at the Covent Garden Theatre and she’ll need to find a ‘protector’ who can provide her with money and a dwelling. Wardrobe mistress, Mrs. Andrews tells Phoebe of the King’s Place brothel and convinces her that the protector she needs is Lord DeVere. Knowing that she can’t get a man like DeVere on her own, Phoebe takes on her stage character ‘Kitty Willis’ and heads off to the brothel. While there, she meets Sir Edward ‘Ned’ Chambers first and finds herself attracted to the wrong guy.

Although she knows that the only way that she’s going to be able to survive is to get the eye of DeVere, Phoebe can’t help but be slightly repulsed by him. The first time she meets him he’s naked, getting a blowjob from an equally naked woman and has another’s breasts in his hands and mouth. He easily dismisses them then says to Kitty, "Come then, Kitty, my sweet, little puss. Sit on your master’s lap, and I’ll stroke you ‘till you purr." I don’t care who you are, that right there is funny and also sets the perfect tone for DeVere’s character. He’s a riot, I’ll tell ya.

The chemistry between Phoebe and Ned really heats up when they’re included in one of DeVere’s crazy dares and they succumb to their mutual attraction in the King’s bedroom. There’s a scene when Ned gets fed up with DeVere and does something that had me laughing out loud with both shock and a heck yeah!

There are some secondary characters that really make this story come alive. Charlotte Hayes, owner of the brothel, has got a scene that made me do a double take. The Prince of Wales and his group - Viscount Malden, Charles Fox and Freddie Howard all add a well-rounded quality to the story.

The sex scenes between Phoebe and Ned were well done and might I say, hot. Those two couldn’t keep their hands off each other and it was fun to watch them dance around each other for a bit.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. There were many laugh out loud moments especially with the antics and sayings of DeVere. I’m really hoping that he gets his comeuppance and soon. From what I read in the epilogue, we get to find out more about Ned’s daughter Vesta in the next story, The Virgin Huntress. I can’t wait for that.

Happy Reading Folks!
