Review: Some Girls Bite

It looks like I have found myself a new UF heroine to love and a new series to fixate over. I know, I know... the Chicagoland Vampires series isn't new. But it's new to me, which means I get to inhale these books, back to back.

Merit never had any interest in becoming a vampire. She was happy in her life as a graduate student, living with her best friend Mallory. But an attack on campus in the middle of the night, took her choice away from her. Someone ripped her throat out, but fortunately, master vampire Ethan was there to change her over before she could die.

The story follows Merit as she comes to accept what she has become... what it will mean for her life... and her future with her sexy and powerful new master. There is also action and intrigue as we get the details on the different vampire houses and we discover that Merit's assault was just one in a string of attacks on women in Chicago.

There's a wealth of great secondary characters that help enrich the story. Mallory, Merit's best friend, is a pretty substantial part of the book. She is a constant support to Merit through her changes and has her own storyline tied up in magic and a new relationship. (A relationship that could have been fun to watch, by the way, had it not developed at supersonic speed and had so many details happen off page.) There's also a lot of potential to develop stories surrounding Catcher the sorcerer, Jeff the shifter, or the folks that come to make up Merit's vampire brethren, like Lindsay and Luc.

But of course, I tend to fixate on the more romantic and sexual relationships. There's a great will-they or won't-they going on with Merit and Ethan. And it's hot; but watching Ethan with another woman managed to cool my jets quite a bit. There's also a dark-horse romantic candidate in Morgan. I'm interested to see how it will all play out in later books.

A fun and feisty start to the series. I am excited to see where it will go next. A little more than 4 stars.

Goodreads has this series as a recommendation for me. Think I might have to get into it.

I just read this first one not that long ago, also. Haven't yet gotten the 2nd one, but I fell in love with Merit and the rest. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who hadn't delved into this series, yet. :) Great review!

I love when this happens! You discover a new series that’s not actually new since it has several books published, and then you read them all back-to-back and you don’t have to wait for the next book to come out because it’s already there! But then it turns out that there’s a new book coming out next year and you’re back in waiting hell, but it’s worse because you’re so high from reading them all together that now the despair is almost unbearable! I hate/love great book series...

OK. I read the whole series in a big marathon over the weekend. I just finished Drink Deep. Amber is right about the series improving. But yes, Brie, now I have to wait until August 2012 to find out what happens next. (**sigh**)

I do recommend these books, though, for any UF fans who haven't read them yet. Good stuff.
